Trained for another 18 months between B and C schools, culminating in orders as an aviation logistics computer system engineer (6494) to MALS-16 at MCAS Futenma, Okinawa, Japan. Shortly after arriving in Okinawa, promoted to Corporal and during the middle of his 1 year overseas deployment, and was awarded NCO of the quarter. After finishing that deployment, he received orders to his final duty station MCAS Tustin in Orange County, CA, attached to MALS-16. While at MCAS Tustin, Mario was directly involved in leading several key computer modernization projects involving the deployment of new computer systems or software. Lead a team of Marines to the former Los Angeles Air Force Base up CA Highway 5 and recovered hundreds of abandoned legacy 1st generation laptop and desktop computers that the Air Force no longer wanted. For this effort, awarded first Navy Achievement medal. In middle year, promoted to Sergeant, and was tasked leading the preparation to deploy aboard the SS Curtiss (T-AVB-4), one of the two Wright-class Aviation Logistics Support (Roll-on/Roll-off) Container Ships converted for the Military Sealift. This deployment was part operation Kernal Blitz 95 (Dawn Blitz), at sea from 18 March to 7 April 1995 off the coast of southern California. Final year spent in S3 Training, serving an NCOIC billet to deliver required training programs to Squadron personnel, while also executing orders from the S-3 officer to develop a database system for tracking and reporting on progress of training qualifications (including Rifle, Pistol, Swim, and Physical Fitness). For this effort, again awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, gold star in lieu of 2nd award. Honorably discharged from Marine Corps active duty in November 1996. |
