    United States Coast Guard

The Coast Guard participated in every major amphibious landing carried out by U.S. forces in World War II. At the start of the war, the Coast Guard had only 25,000 officers and enlisted men. That figure grew to a wartime high of 241,000, as they provided port and coastal security, escorted convoys, landed troops and armaments, and sank 12 German submarines.

They also lost one Coastie during the Battle of Iwo Jima, if you visit the Marine Corps Museum, the EGA and Anchors wall for Iwo Jima, look dead center, left right, up down there is a Coast Guard Crest.

From what i can recall as a youngster growing up,, Most of the shallowwater sailors were activated into the NAVY when the Excrament Hits the Propellers......also , The USCG members have only been awarded ONE M.O.H. as a result of that tactic.
